DURNACOL Skills Hub is fully fledged tertiary institution, situated close to Newcastle in Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal. Since our inception in 2009, the demand for a national technical training centre with high quality standards has contributed to our success.
Alice Pool launched Durnacol Skills Innovation Hub in 2008 to equip the local community of Durnacol and surrounding rural area unemployed youth with engineering skills in an effort to address the extreme high unemployment rate since Exxaro mines closed in 2001.
DSIH strongly believes in maintaining compliance with South Africa’s affirmative action and Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment requirements, and thus the company’s Employment Equity objective remains at 80% black.
Initially, DSIH provided apprenticeship training to Fitters, Electricians and Millwrights but eventually we managed to obtained full accreditation for other trades such as Diesel Mechanic, Motor Mechanics, Welders and Fitter and Turners. We also obtained SAMSA accreditation to offer the Marine Engineering programme, one of our flagship programmes.
The quality of our training and our serious commitment to safety kept the doors open through very challenging times. In 2012 we obtained accreditation to offer trade testing for Diesel Mechanics. We were encouraged by MERSETA to apply for trade testing for all our other trades which we then obtained in 2014.
With our on-site accommodation, which includes three meals per day, we attracted learners as far as Mauritius and Kenya to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment. It was then that we realized that we now serve a community much bigger than Durnacol.
Learners are daily exposed to a well-disciplined workplace. Well-experienced artisans who facilitate both theoretical as well as practical training in our fully equipped workshops ensure that learners are well prepared for the real work environment. As only one of a few SAMSA accredited training providers in South Africa who can offer the Engineer Workshop Training for the Marine Engineers, we now see ourselves as a training force which can make a difference in our society both inland and on the sea.
DURNACOL Skills Hub draws students from across Southern Africa and consistently produces sought after skilled technical artisans in a range of specialist disciplines.
